PST - Petroleum Safety Training

Governing Body:  Enform

Enform

Petroleum Safety Training (PST) is an interactive multi-media program with video, audio, and interactive lessons. This safety training program has been designed and produced for all workers in the petroleum industry. PST meets all of the requirements for the IRP 16 - Basic Industry Safety Orientation.

This program is user friendly and has been specifically designed so learners do not need significant computer skills. Learners can relax and enjoy the training process, as they are easily guided through each lesson.

The PST is an interactive multi-media program with actual video introductions and tutorials. Topic quizzes and lesson testing aid the learner through the program. Total running time of the program is approximately six hours.

Topics include:

  • Regulations
  • WHMIS
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Hazard Recognition & Control
  • Common Workplace Hazards & Control
  • Oil & Gas Industry Hazards & Control
  • Gas Hazards & Control Measures
  • Exploration Hazards & Control (Optional)
  • Rig Hazards & Control (Optional)
  • Oilfield Trucking Hazards & Control (Optional)
  • Production & Plant Hazards & Control (Optional)
  • Work Procedures
  • Safety Communication

Note:

Lessons 1-7, 12 & 13 are required to meet the minimum for IRP 16. Optional lessons 8-11 look closer at four differing areas in the oil & gas industry that the learner may work in. The learner must choose at least one optional lesson for certification.

Testing and Certification
Each topic is followed by a short skills test to ensure learner comprehension. Once the program is completed, a course report may be printed for certification submission. Upon certification, Enform issues a wallet card and a wall certificate, indicating course option completion, WHMIS certification, and provides a hardhat sticker.

ACSA Safety Training Equivalency
The Petroleum Safety Training (PST) CD-ROM Program and the Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) have been granted equivalency. The Construction Owners Association of Alberta (COAA), Enform, and the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA) have performed a comparison of the content of the two programs and deemed the objectives and theory of the training to be equivalent.

As a result of this decision, member companies of the COAA should accept PST wallet card certifications issued by Enform as meeting the current requirement of CSTS certification. In the petroleum industry, companies should accept CSTS certification issued by ACSA as equivalent to any requirement of PST certification.

Although the examples used in each program are industry related, companies will no longer be required to purchase two programs to work in both the construction and petroleum industries. Companies are encouraged to use their industry's program and use this equivalency should the need arise.
